Solar triumphs in RESS 5 with 860 MW awarded – powering Ireland’s future

Industry

Solar Ireland welcomes today’s RESS 5 provisional results, which confirm over 860 MW of new solar projects have been awarded contracts – representing over 79% of all successful installed capacity.

This outcome underlines solar’s role as the most versatile renewable energy technology in Ireland, delivering clean power not just from large-scale solar farms but also from the rapidly expanding network of residential and commercial rooftops. Together, these projects are building a secure, sustainable and people-centred energy system.

Ronan Power, CEO of Solar Ireland, said:
“The RESS 5 outcome, with 860 megawatts of new projects awarded, continues to validate solar’s ability to deliver at scale, strengthening energy security, creating jobs, and supporting communities. From family homes to schools, businesses and utility-scale projects, solar is uniquely placed to drive Ireland’s renewable transition.”

With over 1.7 GW already connected and almost 160% growth since 2023, today’s auction outcome demonstrates the confidence of developers, investors and communities in solar as the fastest deployable and most cost-effective renewable technology.

Solar Ireland will continue to work with Government, regulators and communities to ensure planning, grid, and storage frameworks keep pace with this momentum.
