From Solar Growth to System Value: Ireland’s Next Energy Challenge

Ireland’s rapid solar growth has changed the conversation about the future of our electricity system.

The country now has 3 GW of connected solar, with rooftop systems installed on more than 195,000 homes. At peak output, utility-scale solar has supplied more than one-third of Ireland’s electricity demand.

This is a major achievement for a sector that has scaled from a standing start in just a few years. It also brings Ireland to its next energy challenge: ensuring every unit of clean electricity delivers its full value.

In the latest Future of Energy publication, Solar Ireland CEO Ronan Power argues that the next phase of the transition must focus not only on increasing renewable generation, but on integrating it more effectively with storage, flexible demand and the electricity grid.

Three shifts for the next phase

Ronan identifies three changes that will determine whether Ireland captures the full value of its solar growth.

First, solar and storage must increasingly be developed together. Batteries can store electricity when solar production is abundant and release it when demand rises or the system needs additional support. This can reduce renewable electricity lost through constraints, help manage peaks and extend solar’s contribution beyond daylight hours.

Second, Ireland must connect clean electricity with more flexible demand. Businesses can move suitable activity to periods when renewable power is plentiful, while electric vehicles, heat pumps and smart buildings can respond to price and system signals. Homes, farms and commercial sites can also generate, store and manage more of their own energy.

Third, Ireland needs whole-system planning. Grid development, planning, renewable auctions, storage policy and market design cannot continue to operate as separate conversations. A solar project awaiting a connection, a battery seeking clearer market signals and a business looking for reliable clean power are all parts of the same challenge.

Making clean energy work harder

The consequences extend beyond climate targets. A more coordinated electricity system can strengthen Ireland’s energy security, support more competitive electricity costs and help businesses access the reliable clean power they increasingly require. It can also create skilled employment, support rural incomes and enable greater community participation in the energy transition.

As Ronan writes:

“Solar capacity is arriving. Now the system must catch up. The prize is a more secure, competitive and resilient Ireland, with clean energy working harder for homes, businesses and communities.”

These questions will also be central to Renewable Energy Expo Ireland, taking place at the RDS on 21 and 22 October. Jointly delivered by Solar Ireland, Wind Energy Ireland and Energy Storage Ireland, the Expo will bring together the sectors, businesses and decision-makers needed to build a genuinely integrated renewable energy system.
