A rooftop revolution is underway
A recent piece in the Sunday Independent highlights a clear shift in Ireland’s energy landscape: households are increasingly turning to solar as a response to global instability and rising energy costs.
In the article, Solar Ireland CEO Ronan Power points to a significant surge in demand, with a 100% increase in online interest and a 27% rise in households committing to install solar within days of recent geopolitical developments.
This is not just curiosity. It is action.
What is driving this shift is simple. Households are recognising their exposure to external energy shocks and are looking for long-term solutions that offer:
- Greater control over energy use
- Protection from price volatility
- Immediate and sustained savings
Solar is delivering on all three.
Ireland’s progress to date is significant:
- Solar capacity has trebled since 2023
- Around 177,000 homes are now powered by solar
- Installations are continuing at pace each year
But the bigger story is what comes next.
With an estimated one million homes suitable for solar, Ireland is still only at an early stage of deployment. As Ronan Power notes, we are just 17% of the way through the rollout.
The direction of travel is clear.
What began as a response to rising bills is becoming something more structural: a nationwide shift towards generating energy at home, building resilience, and reducing reliance on imported fuels.
This is what a rooftop revolution looks like in practice.
