Member Spotlight: Kirby's grid connection for Drombeg Solar Farm
Solar Ireland member Kirby Group Engineering has delivered the design and construction of a 110 kV AIS substation to connect the 50 MW Drombeg Solar Farm near Listowel, Co. Kerry to the electricity grid.
The project included the development of the transmission substation and associated infrastructure required to connect the solar farm to the existing overhead network. The substation has also been designed with capacity for future expansion, supporting the wider renewable energy development planned for the site.
As design and build contractor and Project Supervisor Construction Stage (PSCS), Kirby was responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction and pre-commissioning of the electrical and civil works in accordance with EirGrid, ESB Networks and client specifications.
The project forms part of the infrastructure needed to bring new renewable generation onto the Irish electricity system and highlights the growing role of grid connection works in enabling solar deployment at scale.
