This month’s Irish Women in Solar feature highlights Fionnuala Carr, Director at MarVal Power, where she leads commercial solar projects that help businesses transition to renewable energy. With more than 15 years’ experience in the energy sector, Fionnuala’s career spans consultancy, project management, and now, delivering large-scale solar PV solutions across Ireland.

“Solar energy felt like the most direct and impactful way to bring sustainability from the page into practice.”

From Sustainability Studies to Solar Leadership

Fionnuala’s passion for renewable energy began during her undergraduate and postgraduate studies, where she focused on sustainable construction and planning. That early interest soon became a professional mission: to deliver solar projects that deliver both environmental benefits and real-world economic value.

At MarVal Power, she has led the delivery of large-scale solar projects over 2 megawatts in size, working with major Irish brands that place their trust in her team’s expertise.

“Seeing those projects come to life, and knowing the long-term environmental and financial benefits they’ll deliver, is deeply rewarding.”

Breaking Barriers and Building Confidence

Like many women in the energy sector, Fionnuala has had to navigate a male-dominated environment while balancing professional and family responsibilities. She credits confidence in her expertise, a supportive network, and the recognition that diverse voices strengthen the industry as key to overcoming those challenges.

“I’ve learned to overcome hurdles by backing myself and surrounding myself with supportive colleagues. Diverse perspectives— including women’s voices—make the industry stronger.”

Why Women in Solar Matter

For Fionnuala, diversity is not just about representation—it’s about innovation. She believes more women in solar will bring fresh perspectives, new leadership styles, and a culture that reflects the communities the sector serves.

Her advice to women considering a career in renewables is clear:

“Step forward with confidence: your skills and voice are needed. Don’t be discouraged by industry standards—focus on what you bring to the table. Build networks, seek out mentors, and remember that passion and persistence can truly change the future.”

Opportunities and Innovations Ahead

Looking at Ireland’s solar future, Fionnuala sees huge potential in commercial and industrial-scale projects, as businesses look to lower costs, cut emissions, and secure energy independence.

She’s particularly excited about the integration of solar with battery storage, which she describes as a game-changer for energy resilience.

“Combining generation with storage gives businesses greater control over their energy use, reduces reliance on the grid, and makes renewable energy even more resilient.”

A Role Model in Resilience

Fionnuala draws inspiration from female athletes like Ciara Mageean, whose persistence and discipline on the track mirror the determination required to succeed in renewables.

“In many ways, the challenges in sport mirror those in business and renewable energy—breaking barriers, staying focused under pressure, and proving that women can excel in any field.”

As she looks to the future, Fionnuala hopes to continue leading projects that set new benchmarks for quality and performance in solar PV, helping Ireland meet its energy and climate goals.

Fionnuala Carr’s journey is a testament to the power of confidence, persistence, and purpose in driving Ireland’s clean energy future.
