Irish Women in Solar: Fei Wang, Co-Founder of Green Collective
To mark our first Irish Women in Solar feature since becoming Solar Ireland, we are delighted to spotlight Fei Wang, Co-Founder of Green Collective—a data and research service at the heart of Ireland’s clean energy conversation.
With a background spanning public utilities, consulting, and market research, Fei has worked across the entire electricity value chain. Today, through Green Collective, she brings clarity to the energy system by publishing insights on renewable energy data, grid trends, and solar performance.
“I have always believed a clean grid, where solar plays a crucial role, is an essential tool among climate solutions.”
Fei’s journey into the power sector was sparked during a university course on environmental economics. While options in renewables were limited in the early 2010s, she gravitated toward the power sector and never looked back.
From Side Project to Sector Voice
Green Collective started life during the pandemic in New York City as a side project on Twitter (now on Bluesky). Fei and her partner, a software engineer from Ireland, launched Irish Energy Bot—a feed of daily charts showing the role of renewables on the Irish grid.
“We created something that hopefully brought some good news to people during darker times.”
That passion project has grown into a business providing data-driven insights for industry and the public alike, helping to decode what’s happening on the grid and why it matters.
Women in Energy: Representation and Visibility
Fei has long recognised the challenge of underrepresentation in energy. Early in her career, she noted how diversity panels at energy conferences often missed the mark—focusing on yoga or work-life balance rather than addressing meaningful equity in the industry.
“Overcoming lack of representation involves continuing to speak up. Visibility is a powerful tool in advocating for progress.”
Now, through her work, Fei is raising the visibility of the solar sector’s progress in Ireland—while calling for more space for women and underrepresented groups in public discourse and decision-making.
Solar’s Growth—and Its Challenges
Fei’s work makes it clear that solar is already reshaping Ireland’s grid, from peak contributions throughout the year to complex questions around curtailment and infrastructure.
“Don’t make me choose between solar farms and rooftop solar! We need them all.”
She sees massive opportunity in pairing solar growth with demand flexibility and storage, while also urging decision-makers to consider dispatch down as a feature, not a bug, of a renewable-heavy grid.
Looking Ahead
Fei plans to keep expanding her work at Green Collective—supporting decarbonisation through clear, accessible data and helping people see the full picture of solar’s role in Ireland’s energy future.
Her inspiration? A group of older women in Switzerland—KlimaSeniorinnen Schweiz—who recently won a landmark climate case at the European Court of Human Rights.
“Their dedication and ability to build a strong community moved me. A successful energy transition needs both.”
