Ireland adds 1 GW of solar in 2025 - PV Magazine highlights record growth
Ireland added just over 1 GW of new solar capacity in 2025, bringing total installed solar PV to 2,345 MW by December 2025, according to data shared by Solar Ireland and reported this February by pv magazine.
This represents more than a threefold increase in installed capacity since 2023, a remarkable acceleration in deployment across utility-scale, commercial, farm and residential segments.
A balanced and maturing market
Of the 2,345 MW now connected:
1,322 MW comes from utility-scale solar
727 MW from distributed microgeneration
74 MW from mini-generation
53 MW from small-scale commercial
169 MW from non-exporting installations
The strength of the Irish market lies in this balance. Large-scale projects continue to deliver significant capacity under RESS, while rooftop solar across homes, farms and businesses is expanding steadily.
In December 2025, SEAI processed its 100,000th paid application under the Domestic Solar PV Scheme, marking an important milestone in residential participation.
Policy certainty enabling delivery
As highlighted in the article, 2025 saw important policy commitments aligned with deployment:
Continued rooftop grant supports
Retention of 0% VAT on residential solar installations
Increased investment in grid infrastructure
Stable grant frameworks protect affordability, VAT relief reduces upfront cost, and grid investment supports long-term integration.
With 1.7 GW currently in the development pipeline, Ireland enters 2026 with strong momentum.
As our CEO Ronan Power noted in the article:
“Ireland is demonstrating that with the right policy foundations, solar can scale rapidly. The priority now is sustained delivery, deeper system integration, and ensuring we remain firmly on track to achieve the 8 GW nationwide solar PV target by 2030.”
Ireland’s solar sector is scaling, and the focus now shifts to integration, storage, and system readiness to support continued growth.
