Beyond 3GW: Ireland’s next chapter in solar energy

Media

Ireland’s solar sector has reached an important milestone, surpassing 3 GW of installed capacity. But as the industry continues to grow, the conversation is shifting from how much solar we can generate to how we can maximise its value for Ireland.

In a recent feature published by Energy Ireland, Ronan Power, CEO of Solar Ireland, explores the opportunities ahead for the sector and the role solar can play in delivering a cleaner, more secure and resilient energy future.

Building on Ireland’s solar success

Solar has become an increasingly important part of Ireland’s electricity system, with installations ranging from large-scale solar farms to rooftops on homes, schools, farms and businesses.

This progress demonstrates the industry's ability to deliver at scale. But installed capacity is only one measure of success.

The next phase will be about making better use of the clean electricity we generate, strengthening connections between renewable technologies and ensuring that the benefits reach households, businesses and communities across the country.

Looking beyond generation

As Ireland's solar sector matures, opportunities are emerging to integrate solar with battery storage, electrified heating, EV charging and smarter energy management.

These technologies can help households and businesses make more effective use of renewable electricity, while supporting greater flexibility across the wider energy system.

Equally important are the opportunities for farms, communities and businesses to participate directly in Ireland's energy transition, alongside the development of the skills and expertise needed to support continued growth.

Collaboration will be key

Realising the full potential of solar will require continued cooperation between industry, Government, regulators, system operators and communities.

Ireland needs both utility-scale and distributed solar, supported by the right infrastructure, investment and policy frameworks.

As the sector looks towards 2030 and beyond, the focus must remain on delivering meaningful benefits: cleaner electricity, greater energy security, stronger businesses, skilled employment and wider participation in the energy transition.

Ireland has demonstrated how quickly solar can grow. The opportunity now is to ensure that growth delivers lasting value.
