All you need to know about putting solar panels on your roof
As energy costs continue to put pressure on households, clear, evidence-based information on rooftop solar has never been more important.
In a newly published explainer, Paul Deane, Senior Lecturer in Clean Energy Futures at University College Cork, sets out what homeowners in Ireland can realistically expect from installing solar panels on their roof.
The article breaks down how a typical small solar PV system of six to eight panels can generate around one third of a household’s annual electricity needs, with most generation occurring between May and September. Importantly, it explains that solar panels continue to work on overcast days, require no change of electricity supplier, and can power everyday appliances and hot water systems without any noticeable difference in how a home operates.
Paul also outlines the practical considerations homeowners need to be aware of, including system sizing, planning requirements, typical installation costs, available Government grants, and realistic payback periods. Based on current estimates, a simple residential system can save around €400 per year on electricity bills, with payback typically occurring within seven to ten years.
Beyond individual households, the article highlights the wider benefits of rooftop solar for Ireland, from improving energy affordability and security of supply to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Drawing on earlier research carried out at UCC with support from Solar Ireland, it notes that around half of Irish homes have the technical potential to generate electricity from sunlight, which could meet up to a quarter of total residential electricity demand if fully realised.
Crucially, the piece also addresses the barriers that remain, including skills shortages and the upfront cost of installation. Paul makes the case for stronger policy intervention to ensure low-income households can access the benefits of solar, including targeted grant support for homes most exposed to energy poverty.
